If you have been in youth ministry long enough you have encountered days where you feel like you just can’t do it anymore. I know those days/weeks/months where youth ministry just beat me down. Dealing with unhappy parents, struggling through nights of low attendance, seeing students walk away from the Lord, dealing with church people who just don’t get it, being financially burdened, and doubting yourself and your abilities. Those are all things that get us to the point where we think “I don’t know if I am capable of doing this”. Guess what, you CAN do it! God has put you where you are for a reason and He wants to do amazing things with you. We all get to that spot at some point and when we are it is important to remember this…
1.You ARE worthy of being a youth worker
Worth is something we ALL struggle with, even if you are a super confident person. If you are honest you experience thoughts of inadequacy. Often times when it comes to youth ministry the enemy tells us that we are not special enough or good enough to do youth ministry. And that is the voice we hear, that maybe we are not valuable enough to do ministry well. That is just a flat out lie. You ARE worthy, you ARE capable, and you can do amazing ministry! Not because I say so, but because God says so. He said so when He called you to ministry, and He said so when he told us all to “go into all the world and make disciples” He thinks you are WORTHY of being a youth worker.
2. You ARE gifted to reach students
But I am not the cool musical youth person, I am not the athletic person, I am not good at video games, I am not a great speaker, I am not very creative, I am not, not, not. You will never be who you are not, and that is okay. You are exactly who God wants you to be and you are gifted in a way that can be used for Him. The problem comes when we begin comparing our gifts and thinking we are inadequate because we are not gifted like the other guy. To be honest, the non musical guy, that is me. I can’t even clap on beat let alone sing or lead any type of song. I often wish I could do that, but the fact is that is not who I am. God has given me other gifts that He can use, and He has done the same for you! Romans 12:6-8. You are GIFTED to reach students.
3. You ARE capable of doing amazing things with God
There is a major difference between doing things for God, and doing things with God. Often times burnout and frustration comes when we try our hardest and do a bunch of things FOR Him instead of doing things WITH Him. Partner with God in your youth ministry efforts, and the first step to that is working on and building YOUR relationship with Him. We are so good at telling students how to follow Jesus and have a relationship with Him but often times we forget to put that into practice ourselves. Build your personal relationship with Him so that youth ministry becomes something you do with God, not something you do for Him. You are CAPABLE of doing absolutely amazing things with God! (Mark 10:27)
You CAN do it! I know that youth ministry can sometimes feel like an impossible up hill battle, but take comfort in knowing that God wouldn’t put you there if you couldn’t handle it. God has a special task and purpose for you! God wants to do amazing things though you and with you in youth ministry. You CAN do it!
