What If?

December 27, 2017

We all head into 2018 at a different place in our lives. For some, this past year was tough and you definitely want to see something better in 2018. For others this past year was great, things were looking up and you hope it continues into the new year. Still for others maybe 2017 was just “blah” not bad, not great but your hope for 2018 is that you can say with certainty it was great.

No matter the circumstances and outcome of your last year, I think we all hope the next one is good. Nobody sets out to have a bad year, it just happens. But, what if you knew going into 2018 that it would be your last year? Would that change the way you lived it?

I know it’s a morbid and difficult thought, but just imagine for a moment that you knew going into this year that it was your last one. How would that change what you did, how you treated people, the way you acted etc.? Because the harsh reality is this may very well be the last year for some of us. We don’t know. Sure, some people show more external signs pointing to a sooner demise, but the fact is we have no clue. This could be the last year for the healthiest one among us. We just don’t know.

Years ago there was a famous county music song entitled “Live Like You Were Dying” the song walks though a list of things someone might do if they knew they were going to die. It highlights things such as mountain climbing, skydiving, bull riding, as well as other thrilling experiences. It is a moving song with a catchy tune, but it also poses a very important question for us a Christians.

As Christians, if you knew this year was your last, how would it effect the way you lived?

What if you could radically advance the Gospel? What if you let go of any fears and shared Jesus with those around you with reckless abandon? What if you invited everyone you came in contact with to church to hear about the savior of the universe?

What if you could step up and lead and train leaders around you? What if through your zealous effort, the church was busting at the seems with leaders ready to change the world?

What if you could support the mission of the church so vigorously that it would continue on stronger than ever once you were gone? What if 10 years after you were gone, the church was thriving due to your efforts and groundwork?

What if you could love people so genuinely that their lives were forever impacted by you and your heart? What if your example became the standard for how to love one another? What if you were able to exemplify Jesus to someone who needed it most?

What if you could leave a legacy that would continue for years with the way you lived your last year on earth?

What if…?

Okay, this probably isn’t your last year, but the next question is this… why would you choose to live differently than if it was?

If every single one of us lived 100 more years from today it would still not be much time in the spectrum of eternity and in the scope of the job that needs to be done. None of us have enough time, and therefore all the “what if’s” apply to us.

As we head into 2018, we should all ask ourselves the simple question of “what if?” This year can be different and you can make it the best year ever. The truth is we are all dying, and none of us can afford to waste this year. Don’t allow this year to just happen to you; be proactive and do something incredible. Live like you were dying.
