When You Want To Quit

October 25, 2016

It is no secret, ministry is hard. We have all had those weeks where we just want to quit. Maybe the idea of not being in ministry, having a normal job, normal hours, more money, less stress, and less pressure sounds good to you. And why wouldn’t it? I mean, come on, what we do in ministry and what we deal with almost daily is NOT EASY!

If you have felt like you are at the end of your rope and just wanted to quit, you are not alone. There are weeks where I want to quit every single day. But there is a reason why we don’t just quit, why we don’t just walk out. It is not like any other “job” we have been called to this ministry and we feel that higher calling. So, what do you do when you are just done? What do you do when you feel like you just want to quit?

Here are 5 things you can do to keep from quitting…

1. Remember why you are doing it

Go back to the beginning and remember why you are doing ministry. When messed up stuff happens in ministry it is so easy to start questioning if you should even be in ministry. Take yourself back to why you got started in ministry in the first place. Remember your calling, your motives, and your passion.

2. Remember your wins

Yes, it may feel like everything is terrible and you just want to quit but it wasn’t always like that. You have seen huge wins in ministry, remember those wins! Make a “Wins” box where you jot down the wins that happen so you can go back and look at them to remind yourself of those awesome times in your ministry. Save any ‘thank you’ notes, letters of encouragement, or positive things that have happened so you can pull them out and look at them when times are rough.

3. Pray

Okay, here comes the God stuff… But seriously. Talk to God, He understands and He wants to hear from you. You know this, this isn’t new information for you but when you are in the midst of the struggle of ministry and feel like quitting often times we forget this very crucial step. We would advise other people all day about their need to pray but for some reason we forget.

4. Talk to a mentor

Find someone you can talk to. Someone who understands, who has been through it, who knows the exact struggle, another youth pastor. You need to be connected to other youth workers who can encourage you on your journey. Find a youth worker who is wiser and has been in the game longer than you. If you are the wisest and have been in the game the longest then first off, thanks for reading my blog! Secondly, you already know this which means you already have a mentor in your life to talk to. Talking to someone when you feel like you just can’t go on in ministry can be the best thing you can do, you are NOT IN THIS ALONE!

5. Take a breather

Take some time to step back and get perspective. Even if it is just for a day, or a few hours. I know that it’s hard, especially during those times when you do want to quit. Those are the times when you are buried and overwhelmed so it seems impossible to take a breather, duh that’s why you want to quit. But it is so important to stop for a little bit and clear your head so you can see clearly and get perspective on everything.

Ministry is hard, and if you haven’t felt like quitting yet trust me you will! But hopefully these 5 things can help you the next time you feel like quitting. We love to hear from you, feel free to reach out to us at stokedonyouthministry@gmail.com. Thank you for being a youth worker!
